HUB Testing for TY2024 Starts Thursday, January 16, 2025

MyTAXPrepOffice Editorial Group

MyTAXPrepOffice will take part in the IRS’s pre-production testing (HUB Testing) again this year. The following testing schedule has been released by the IRS.

We will begin accepting e-files for HUB testing on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. These returns will be held for transmission until the IRS opens HUB testing on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 11 am EST.

The IRS will be accepting TY2024 returns.

MyTAXPrepOffice is limited to a fixed daily number of e-files during this period. According to the results of the daily processing, the IRS may exercise its right to request that MyTAXPrepOffice stop sending e-files for the day. The IRS may also change their schedule for the testing at their convenience.

You may begin transmitting e-files on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. However, there is no guarantee that any returns you transmit will be received and/or acknowledged by the IRS before Monday, January 27, 2025.

You may receive acknowledgments for some returns during this testing window, but it is likely that you will not receive all your acknowledgments until after regular e-filing begins on Monday, January 27, 2025.

What is HUB Testing?

Understanding IRS HUB Testing: What It Is and How It Works

When tax season approaches, the IRS conducts a vital process called HUB testing. This controlled launch period allows the IRS to ensure its electronic filing systems are functioning properly before the official e-filing season begins. Here’s everything you need to know about how HUB testing works and how it might impact your practice.

What Is IRS HUB Testing?

HUB testing is a preparatory phase during which the IRS processes a limited number of tax returns through its electronic filing system. The purpose is to identify and fix any potential issues to ensure the system is ready for the full volume of e-filed returns.

When Does HUB Testing Take Place?

Typically, HUB testing occurs in early January, shortly before the IRS officially opens e-filing to the public. The exact dates vary from year to year. Tax professionals are notified of these dates through resources like the MyTAXPrepOffice News widget on the Dashboard and email communication once the IRS makes the announcement.

How Are Returns Selected for HUB Testing?

Not all early-submitted returns are included in HUB testing. The IRS randomly selects returns for testing from those transmitted during the period. Tax professionals and software providers, such as MyTAXPrepOffice, have no control over which returns are chosen.

If your client's return is not selected, it will simply remain in the queue until e-filing officially opens.

Can Returns Be Changed During HUB Testing?

After transmitting a return for HUB testing, no changes can be made until the IRS processes it. The return must be either accepted or rejected before you can make corrections or resend it. To avoid delays, double-check all information for accuracy before transmission.

How Many Returns Are Processed?

The IRS doesn’t disclose how many returns it processes during HUB testing. Most returns sent early will remain in a queue until the official e-file opening.

What About Refunds for HUB-Processed Returns?

If a return is selected for HUB testing, the timing of the client’s refund depends on several factors:

Credits Claimed: Under the PATH Act of 2015, refunds for returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) cannot be issued before February 15, regardless of when the return is processed.

Returns Without These Credits: These may result in earlier refunds if selected during HUB testing compared to those submitted after e-filing opens.

Why Is HUB Testing Important?

For tax professionals, understanding HUB testing helps set client expectations, particularly for early filers. It’s a crucial step in ensuring the IRS’s systems are ready for the busy tax season and helps identify any technical issues before they become widespread problems.

By staying informed about HUB testing, you can better guide your clients and ensure a smoother tax filing experience.
