Ernesto Relief Extended to Victims in U.S. Virgin Islands

In response to the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Ernesto, the IRS has announced significant tax relief for individuals and businesses across the U.S. Virgin Islands. This relief extends the deadlines for various tax-related filings and payments until February 3, 2025. The extension covers a wide range of tax obligations, including filing individual and business tax returns, making estimated tax payments, and other time-sensitive actions originally due on or after August 29, 2023.

This automatic relief is provided to all taxpayers with an IRS address of record in the affected disaster area. Those impacted do not need to contact the IRS to receive the extension, as it will be applied automatically. However, taxpayers who receive penalties or notices despite being eligible for this relief are encouraged to reach out to the IRS to have the situation corrected.

The IRS is committed to supporting those affected by Tropical Storm Ernesto as they recover, recognizing the challenges posed by the storm’s aftermath. The extended deadline provides crucial breathing room for residents and businesses in the U.S. Virgin Islands, allowing them to focus on recovery without the immediate pressure of tax deadlines.

In addition to the deadline extension, the IRS will work with any taxpayer who lives outside the disaster area but whose records necessary to meet a deadline are located within the affected region. Taxpayers qualifying for this relief who live outside the disaster area need to contact the IRS directly at 866-562-5227.

For those facing significant loss due to the storm, the IRS offers the option to claim disaster-related casualty losses on federal income tax returns for the year the disaster occurred or the previous year. This can result in expedited tax refunds, providing additional financial relief to those in need.
